piecing

Published by waterpixie under quilting, sewing

piecing.jpg

Last Saturday I started my two day Beginning Quilting class at a local fabric shop.

It’s fun!

I learned a lot in that first class and I’m really looking forward to the second class this Saturday.

So this week I am cutting, subcutting and piecing my stars together. Then we’re going to learn how to do the sashing and combine the rows to complete the quilt top.

I can’t wait to have this finished, the fabrics are so delicious! I picked tones that go with our home and added some pink in there for me!

I’m outnumbered over here, ya know!

bubbles

Published by waterpixie under Sam, photography

sammybubbles.jpg

Yesterday, during a homework recess, the boys we out back and blew bubbles. It became more entertaining once Sammy joined in and I grabbed my camera to catch the fun.

When I was going thru the pictures today they made me laaaaaaaugh! I love his determination to jump and pop the bubble. He’s actually quite good at getting them before they pop.

sammybubbles3.jpg

We got lots of funny shots. I like to call this one “the shark”.

sammybubbles1.jpg

I like his eyes in this one. On his way to pop one bubble and looking for the one that’s going to get it next.

sammybubbles2.jpg

Can you imagine how much fun he must have thought this one was? All those bubbles coming at him at once?

Ah, the life of a dog.

This week’s challenge at I Heart Faces is Blue. You must have the color blue in your photo. I’m hoping you can tell that Owen’s got on a navy blue sweatshirt, which makes his eyes stand out. He was pretty “blue” himself when this was taken during our Easter Egg Roll tradition. He wasn’t very happy when he realized that his decorated egg that he spent a long time on would get damaged during the event.

You can check out all the other wonderful entries at I Heart Faces!

Lemon Rosemary Chicken

Published by waterpixie under food

I wanted to share with you today a recipe that is a family favorite. It has a long story to it, but the short version is that a friend, Tasha, shared a chicken recipe years ago and since then I’ve put my own lazy twist on it. LOL! Well, lazy and added a few ingredients. It’s also super easy because it’s basically a “to taste” recipe. In other words, there are no measurements for anything. You just use the ingredients to your liking. Here it goes!

What you need:

Chicken WITH the skin and the bone! Seriously! DO NOT try this with boneless/skinless. It won’t taste as good, I promise you!
One blulb of garlic
One package of rosemary - you can find fresh herbs in your produce area, don’t use dried!!!
At least 6 lemons
Kosher Salt - table salt is EVIL!
Pepper

Preheat oven to 450.

img_9443.jpg

First you rinse and put your chicken in the dish. You can’t see it here, but I always make two dishes of this when I’m making it for dinner. That way I have left overs! I tend to just buy whatever chicken pieces are on sale that week, it really doesn’t matter which ones you use. You just want it to be on the bone and with the skin.

img_9445.jpg

Next, you salt and pepper your chicken, and rub it into the meat. I looooooooooves a crispy chicken, so I tend to put more salt on it than pepper. And the Kosher salt is such a nice size with a totally different taste than table salt. Seriously, don’t use table salt! I’m not a fan of it, and reserve it for baking recipes.

img_9448.jpg

Then you’ll want to slice your lemons in half, reserving one or two, and juice them. You can also use the lemon concentrate for a stronger lemony taste.

img_9449.jpg

Then you just pour the lemon juice over the chicken.

img_9452.jpg

Now for the reserved lemons. I like to add lemon slices to the tops of the chicken but I don’t like the bitter taste that the peel can leave behind. I like to cut off the peel before cutting the slices. To do this I just slice the top and bottom off so I have a flat surface to keep the lemon from rolling around.

img_9454.jpg

Then I simply slice off the peel, rotating the lemon after each slice until it looks like that.

img_9455.jpg

Then I slice the lemon! Two lemons is ideal, but if you’ve only got one left over (like I did this day), then all you need to do is cut the slices in half. This will give you plenty of slices to lay on top of the chicken.

img_9457.jpg

Just like that!

This next step is my favorite! I learned this garlic trick from an Alton Brown episode, back when we had TV and I used to watch his show religiously!

img_9458.jpg

You’re going to use a whole bulb of garlic. Don’t worry! It’s not going to make the chicken spicy! What I love so much about this recipe is how light all the flavoring is. Oh, that’s my little garlic peeler tube thing I got years ago with my Sister-in-Law Julie. We went to a fabulous kitchen store (I can’t remember what the name was, but it’s no longer there) and I walked out with this and a Silpat. I’ve had then for about 10 years and haven’t had to replace them. Another bonus, Don thinks this is fun, so I often get him to peel my garlic! Every little bit helps!

img_9461.jpg

All you so is put the garlic clove in the tube.

img_9463.jpg

Then you smash it and roll it. And you ignore my dry hands.

img_9465.jpg

When you’re done, you just plop it out and the skin with either already be off or you just have to “unwrap” it.

img_9468.jpg

Do this to the whole bulb, then add the WHOLE cloves to the baking pan. You do not chop them up in any way! The secret is that when you use whole cloves, it makes the chicken moist. When you chop up the garlic, it makes your food spicy and that’s not what we’re going for with this dish. What we do want is a moist chicken, so we leave the garlic whole.

img_9466.jpg

Next you take your fresh Rosemary, rinse and add it to the baking pan. I currently don’t have an herb garden of any sort, so I just purchase my fresh herbs from the grocery store. They are usually packaged and in the produce section.

img_9469.jpg

This is what your baking pan will look like at this point! Now it’s ready to be put in the oven.

I bake it at 450 for about 30 min, then check and add more baking time, if needed.

img_9471.jpg

When it’s all done it’s this lovely brown with a crispy skin! And your kitchen will smell SOOOOO yummy!

img_9477.jpg

Mmmmmm!! Our favorite way to eat it is with some sticky rice and some veggies. Broccoli is the veggie of choice around here these days. We add soy sauce to the rice. Another side that goes really well with this is red potatoes. I’ll have to share that another time!

And now I know at least one dish I’m making for dinner this week! And kinda sad that it isn’t for today! LOL!

Enjoy!

Easily the best toy we’ve bought, and a big favorite with Sam, is his wubba! If you have a dog, you’ve probably seen these everywhere! They are easily found in pet supply stores as well as online and in retail chains.

I love them! Easy to play tug of war with and to toss for Sammy to chase and catch. He likes to squeak it as he’s running back to bring it to me to toss again - which I think is cute! ;)

Anyway, my brother’s dalmatian turned one yesterday and we had a little “paw-ty” for her! LOL! Sammy wore a tie, I’ll have to share a picture of that later - after I download them from my camera and stop giggling!

Like millions of others, I’ll never forget that morning.Today is Patriot Day.I’d like to share with you a song by my favorite band, Live. The story goes that it’s release was pushed back an album and came out with erie timing. There is a video of this shot with footage of Ed at the site along with aftermath of the many emergency crews working in the area. I’ll not share that one, incase of anyone having sensitivities to seeing the footage again. Instead I’ll share this version they performed at the Paradiso. Overcome

number nine

Published by waterpixie under Uncategorized

Did you do anything fun for today? 9/09/09?

I did!

I went and bought The Beatles: Rockband! I got to play it a little bit with my boys after homework and dinner. It’s fun to watch Owen play the drums and listen to Perrin sing what he knows as he’s strumming the bass! :) I’m really enjoying the set up of this Rockband addition. It’s a little weird to not select and create your own character, but you soon don’t care as you strum, sing, or drum along with John, Paul, George, and Ringo. It’s even entertaining for those watching the screen instead of playing along. Each song is like a music video and fun to watch on it’s own. Afterall, you already like the music and enjoy singing along if you’re buying this, right?

Unfortunately, I have to wait until Friday to go watch 9. Would have been awesome to see it today and complete my number nine day! LOL! I’ll share my thoughts on the movie during the weekend.

yellow submarine

Published by waterpixie under just stuff

fishbowl.jpg

I love this little fish bowl. We bought these delightful glass sea adventure several years ago at The Block. I’m guessing these are about 8 years old - we’re both having a bad time of remembering when exactly we bought them. You know, doing the parent thing where you try to remember which kids you had or how old they were when you got something. LOL! That’s when you realize that time really does fly!

Anyway, we recently rediscovered our little trinkets when we were preparing for our new washer and dryer. These had been carefully wrapped in tissue paper, placed inside the fishbowl and stored in the washer and dryer area. Since the rediscovery we’ve enjoyed the whimsy of having our own sea life.

You can’t see all of them in this picture, but in this bowl we have an octopus, two starfish, a goldfish, a blue whale, a killer whale, a dolphin, a shrimp, a clam, a sting ray, and the little yellow submarine. Which is actually a blue and yellow submarine, but we won’t tell it that. I have no idea what each one cost, but I’m glad we splurged and got as many as we did. Sometimes it’s fun to get something a little spontaneous and a little whimsical.

Hmmmm, and it’s got me remembering why we bought them to begin with. Perrin’s baby room had an ocean theme. So these are 8 - 9 years old. Maybe my memory isn’t as bad as I think it is after all!

It’s just hard to hear it as I’m singing that song in my head every time I see my little sub. ;)

baby shower

Published by waterpixie under paper crafting

banner1.jpg

It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up my paper crafting supplies to make something cute and fun. A couple of Saturdays ago I hosted a baby shower for one of my Sisters-in-Law (I have seven). It was a good “excuse” to break out my scallop scissors and dust off my paper trimmer. Seriously, I had to dust it off. How sad is that?

I wanted to make a cute decoration and with a baby shower theme of “baseball” I thought making a pennant banner would be perfect! I used the instructions created by Jenn in her tutorial over on Splitcoaststampers: Pennant Banner

banner2.jpg

As you can see, mine is a simplified version of the festive holiday one in the tutorial. I omitted letter embellishments and opted to string mine together by punching holes in each top corner and threading the twill tape thru them. This allowed for me to adjust the placement of the pennants. They are easily kept separated by the ribbon embellishments between each one. I found the cute designer papers in Michaels and the ribbons are various ones from my stash that went with the colors on the papers. I backed each pennant with an ivory cardstock and used my scallop scissors for the added design.

Yes, I love Martha Stewart.

banner3.jpg

Here you can get an idea of what it looked like hanging the full length of our ode to Ikea library area in the front room. We’re not addicted to these Expedit bookcases, why would you say such a thing? Just don’t look in any other of our rooms, or you’ll call me a liar. I blame it on Ikea for making them in such a variety of sizes and in white.

I’d also feel better if you’d ignore the poorly decorated tops of the bookcases. I’m working on it. Got some simple white frames yesterday so I can start adding more family photos. I’ll have to explain the photos that are currently along the top at another time. ;)

favors1.jpg

The favors were very simple but I thought they looked pretty cute. After all, everything looks cute in a cello bag! Each cello bag had a pack of Cracker Jacks and sunflower seeds. I really wanted to do peanuts and Cracker Jacks, but couldn’t find individually packaged peanuts. So I went for the favorite “baseball” snack of my Brothers-in-Law and got sunflower seeds to add to the bags. I did use peanuts as the guessing game. They were shelled and in a very cute milk can container that I found and wished I kept for myself. Haha!

favors2.jpg

I created the simple “thank you” banner using scraps from the pennant banner and the sentiment from the SU! set Family Phrases. Then I punched two holes to thread the cake tester pick thru and secured them to the cello bag with the twill tape. I used a cake tester pick because they are longer than toothpicks so it gave me more area to work with when tying the stick to the bag.

It was a lot of fun and I was quite tired from being up so late the week prior to the baby shower. But I found that these simple touches helped to pull the theme together and I didn’t have to spend a lot on pre-made decorations. Which is why we spend so much on paper crafting supplies and tools, right? To safe money? LOL!!

I do love a yummy bowl of Cream of Wheat. Even during our crazy heat spike, it’s still yummy in the morning when you need a little something for a sore throat. Putting it in a cute yellow bowl helps, too. ;)

These past few weeks I’ve been busy with the boys in school - doing homework and getting used to the new schedule, my days go by so fast now that they get out at 2:10 on Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri then out at 1:10 on Weds.

I hosted a successful baby shower for one of my Sisters-in-Law this past weekend. Couldn’t have done it without the help of my other wonderful Sisters-in-Law! It was fun to do some paper crafting for the decorations and favors! It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up my scalloped scissors! I’ll share a short post on the two projects later.

I also had a sick little boy and a sick big boy during my little “blog break” and it was my turn these past couple of days. After getting some rest today I’m feeling much better!

Got an exciting delivery today! How I love getting boxes from Amazon when I know there’s something in there for me, too! LOL! Today’s delivery included the books Martha Stewart’s Cupcakes and Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts. I’ve already decided on the first cupcake recipe and almost have the first quilt pattern decided on. If I make it to the store today, I plan to pick up the stuff for the cupcakes! YUM!

I hope it’s not boiling in your neck of the woods this weekend. We are in the 100s, so this weekend’s activities will include things like taping ice cubes to our foreheads and standing by the air conditioning vents.
