on the seventh day of Christmas

Today is Don’s birthday!! He is having fun playing his new sheet music that I got him for his Birthday. I had the boys give him the Charlie Brown Christmas music, and I gave him the Lord of the Rings music for the piano (with Concerning Hobbits, which he didn’t have) and the music for Baby, It’s Cold Outside.

Last night I asked him what his favorite Christmas movie was, so that I could have the question today be about something he likes. He couldn’t give me just one answer as he loves White Christmas and Holiday Inn, among others. Since I had already used those for questions, he said that he also looks forward to watching the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol.

I couldn’t think of a good trivia question for this since there have been so many versions, dramatic and whimsical, of this story. It truly is one that tells of the real meaning of Christmas spirit, and reminds us to live each day with that feeling in our heart. So today’s “trivia” will be a little bit different, and not really trivia at all. Here we go:

“TRIVIA” QUESTION: What is your favorite version of the story A Christmas Carol, and why?

Do you love watching Patrick Stewart perform the role of Scrooge?
Do you enjoy the more whimsical versions with Mickey or Kermit the Frog?
Do you look forward the widely favorite George C. Scott version?
Or do you enjoy laughing while watching the inspired by version, Scrooged, with Bill Murray?
Any version at all, tell us what it is!

Tonight I’ll have Don pick a number and that will be the lucky person for today!

I’ll be posting the goodies later, as for now, I have to get ready for the plumber to come and fix the crazy toilet!

Happy Birthday, Don!!!

***ETA: Thank you so much for all the Birthday wishes to Don! He was thrilled to have so many people send wishes and share their favorite version of A Christmas Carol.

Before he left for work this morning I had him pick a number and it was 23!!!

So Dale Anne, email me your address and I’ll get some goodies off to you!

I realize I forgot to take the picture yesterday of the goodies, so I’ll be doing that later today when I post the trivia later.

Happy Birthday Don! I think my favorite version of A Christmas Carol is probably the Muppets Christmas Carol. I have fond memories of the Muppet Show growing up, and always loved the movies they did with Kermit and Piggy as the stars. They are fun and silly, but still get the message across. Of course, I’ve always enjoyed the classic with George C. Scott, as well.

I think my vote is for the whimsical Mickey version. This story never fails to touch my heart and put life in perspective. I chose a childs representation of the story because of the way it approaches important life lessons with a simplicity that we can all understand, and, because it invites us to experience the wonder Christmas with a child’s spirit of excitement and awe.

I would have to say that my all time favorite is the classic version… I love classic movies and can’t get enough of them. Your blog is great and I love reading it. Happy Birthday Don!

Happy Birthday Don!! I think the Bill Murray one is my favorite because I love to laugh and he cracks me up! My husband and I also love the George C. Scott version. We have a tradition that we make some popcorn and turn off all the lights except the Xmas tree and sit on the couch and watch it together.

  7. Mandy Cheshire says:

I like the Duck Tales version! Haha! Maybe cuz the antagonist is called Scrooge McDuck. HA! How can you not love that! Happy birthday to Don!

Happy Birthday Don!! And I’m with you…The Patrick Stewart version is the best!! My favorite part is when he wakes up on Christmas Morning and starts to laugh. It seems at first that he is coughing…I think it’s because he hadn’t laughed in so long, that he’d forgotten how. Anyway, that’s my favorite! Merry Christmas!

We love the Muppets Christmas Carol, we always made a family night of watching it and now we do the same with our boys!! Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday Don, same day as DS #3 who turned 1 today!!

  11. Christa says:

I have to say I enjoy the Bill Murray version. Carole Kane is hilarious as a ghost. Bill Murray’s dry sense of humour is a great deal more entertaining, then the traditional”Scrooges”. I’ve seen every one of these movies but, sometimes you need to have a laugh. Happy Birthday to Don! Laughter is key essential in my life! So that is why I like this version the best. Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS! minus the BAH! HUMBUG!

I love the Muppets version the best. it’s a classic story to reach all hearts and I think the Muppets grab the attention of both the young and hold. This is fun! Happy Birthday Don! 😀

Happy Birthday! I really enjoy the animated versions as well- The Muppets, Mickey Mouse, etc. I saw a version last week (for the 1st time) that I really liked- it starred Vanessa Williams and was called A Diva’s Christmas Carol- it was very cute.

  15. Tracy Harp says:

Hands down the Muppet Christmas Carol. Not that I have read the Dickens original but have heard it is the closet adaptation to it. I love Rizzo the Rat screaming “light the lamp, not the rat!”. Fun for children and adults alike!!

  16. Pat says:

    Happy birthday to Don!
My favorite version of “A Christmas Carol” is the 1951 version, that was titled “Scrooge”. It starred Alastair Sim as Scrooge. I like it because it is in black & white…just like “It’s a wonderful life”. My favorite version of “Miracle on 34th St” is also the black & white version.

  17. Joyce Traub says:

Happy Birthday Don! Our favorite is the classic version, but they are all cool.

    Happy Birthday Don!!!!

I perfer watching the classics rather than updated versions or comedy versions, so Patrick Stewart’s version is my preference. I don’t think that there is anything better than snuggling up on the couch with a hot cocoa watching the old classics! Don’t know what I’ll do if my DS decides he wants to watch something else! 😉

  19. Lisa H says:

Totally a traditionalist here with George C Scott. Love it. It’s just completely a classic and is like the Bristish movies.

  20. Debbie Fisher says:

    Happy Birthday Don!

I have to say my favorite is the classic version. The others are fun to watch, but the classic is the one I would choose to see over and over.

  23. Dale Anne says:

I like the classic old black & white version……probably because from the time we got tv in 1960 until I had kids, that was the version we watched every year!!!
Course, the kids loved the muppets one.

  24. Susan says:

    Happy Birthday to Don!
I like the Mickey version of the christmas carol. Very cute.
I also like the female version with Susan Lucci too called Ebbie.

  25. Michelle says:

I love the Kermit version. I collect frogs and have them all over my home and classroom. I even have a tree decorated with frogs in my classroom! So of course I love the Kermit version best because he is a frog.

  26. Debra says:

My favorite is the George C. Scott. The best part is when he realizes he can change the events that will happen. I also love the Mickey one. Who doesn’t love that version!

  27. Michelle says:

    Happy Birthday Don!!!!

I love the Muppets Christmas Carol. It brings back childhood memories, as I always made my family watch it every year.

  28. Diane D says:

Happy Birthday Don! I too like all the classic version and will watch them over and over. doverdi

  29. Lori Faeber says:

I enjoy the Bill Murray one because I love him. It is not my fav Christmas movie as I enjoy “Christmas Vacation” every year, but I prefer the Bill Murray one if I had to choose.
I love your blog! Read it every day
    Lori

  30. Happy Birthday Don!! Hope your day was great!

I would have to go with the Muppet version (my DH is a huge Muppet fan) or the Mickey version. Mostly because it is something that I enjoyed as a kid and now I can enjoy it with my own. :o)

  31. Melisa Burton says:

This is late, but I have to chime in that the Muppets Christmas Carol is my favorite! I love the songs and hum them through out the season. I love the rats reactions to Scrooge’s comments in the office.
    Melisa

  32. Tammy B says:

i actually like the susan lucci version for lifetime….probably because of the gender bending, and because it’s set in a department store…..if i had to choose from your list, it would be ‘scrooged’ because bill murray and those ghosts just crack me up.
